Welcome to the 5th:

Oncology Clinical Trials in Emerging Regions

While cancer continues to be a major health problem in developed countries, emerging regions actually account for a disproportionate number of cases. Eighty five percent of the world’s population live in emerging regions however changing lifestyles, the so called of ‘westernisation’ of diets, increased use of tobacco and poor health resources contribute to increased incidences of cancer with a high mortality ratio.

Whilst this presents these countries with increasing problems it does position emerging regions as suitable targets within which to conduct clinical research in oncology as well as the opportunity to target specific countries or even regions different forms of cancer are particularly prevalent.

Increasing the number and quality of clinical research trials in emerging regions should yield important new data about the epidemiology and biology of cancers that has not previously been available. However, although there are numerous benefits actually identifying countries or regions, securing and working with local investigators and adherence to local regulatory are just some of the many challenges faced when planning and executing oncology clinical trials in emerging regions.

Through a series of keynote regional presentations, case studies and interactive panel discussions the   ‘Oncology Clinical Trials in Emerging Regions’ (OCTER) conference, now in it's 5th year, will examine the current role that emerging regions play in conducting oncology clinical trials focusing on the operational, regulatory and logistical challenges and how is the likely to develop in the future as emerging regions become more developed.

Topics will include –

  • Designing a patient and recruitment strategy plan
  • Anticipating problems in conducting oncology clinical trials and implementing risk strategy
  • Selecting regions for specific cancer trials
  • Assessing the qualifications of a site and prioritization
  • Case studies and first hand experience of running oncology trials in Latin America and Asia Pacific
  • Regulatory variations of emerging markets when conducting oncology trials
  • Selecting and engaging with investigators in emerging regions
  • Specific logistical challenges when conducting oncology clinical trials in emerging regions
  • Managing data collection in emerging regions
  • Ethics committees and their role in developing markets
